English Activities
1. Halloween (31st Oct.)
Origins of Halloween
Halloween is celebrated annually. "Halloween"
means ˇ§All Hallows Eveˇ¨.
1st November is ˇ§All Hollows Dayˇ¨. One story
says that, on that day, the dead spirits come back in search of living bodies
to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the
afterlife.
Naturally, people did not want to be possessed. So on the night of 31st October,
people would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable.
They would then dress up in costumes and noisily paraded around the neighbourhood
in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. Besides,
people would make scary faces into pumpkins or potatoes and place them near
windows or doors to frighten the dead spirits away.
